How the EMI is calculated

We use the standard reducing-balance formula used by most lenders:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1)

  • P — loan amount (principal)
  • r — monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
  • n — number of monthly instalments

At a 0% rate, the EMI is simply the principal divided by the number of months.

Things to keep in mind

  • The rate you enter is your assumption. Lenders set actual rates after assessing your application.
  • Processing fees, insurance and other charges are not included in this estimate.
  • A longer tenure lowers the EMI but usually increases the total interest paid.
  • Floating-rate loans can change EMI or tenure when rates change.
